Inserting Space Weather into a Virtual Space Environment

The Virtual SpacePlane (VSP) is a realistic prototype of the Manned SpacePlane (MSP) and simulates a number of the MSP missions in a realistic manner. To increase the realism of the space environment and space mission planning, we inserted a portrayal of space weather into the VSP’s virtual environment. In this paper we present background on the VSP project, space weather, and describe the requirements, goals and objectives for the space weather insertion research. We discuss the design and implementation of the software that we used to insert space weather into the virtual environment and describe the changes that we made to the user interface to provide a space weather visualization capability. The paper concludes with a presentation of our results and suggestions for future work.
